Sincerest thanks and gratitude on behalf of Allegheny West Civic Council and Deb Mortillaro of Dreadnought Wine for all who shared a wonderful celebration of Eberle wines in the magnificent Holmes Hall on September 15th.
If you would like a chance to Meet Gary Eberle in person, he will be in Pittsburgh for a dinner at The Carlton on October 23rd (The Carlto: 412-391-4099). Contact The Carlton directly to make reservations. Dreadnought will also be having a casual meet and greet with Gary during his October visit so watch for this on the Palate Partners class schedule calendar: palatepartners.com.
The 2018 Tour and Tasting planning is well underway. I’m thrilled to share that we have all of the homes for this tour and it’s a wonderful collection:

- The Zoufaliks – 852 Beech Avenue
- The Malakoffs – 913 Brighton Road
- Cathy Serventi and Gene Wilson – 851 Beech Avenue

Thank you all for opening your homes and gardens!
The theme this year is Ground to Glass from the Central Coast
I’m excited to share with you that several Central Coast wineries (Paso Robles) are contributing to this event for the walking tour. In addition to the wineries, the food pairings are being primarily selected from a cookbook of a premier Paso catering company, Cahoots Catering. Cahoots is donating cookbooks and product for raffle to the event.
New this year is a Showcase event at Holmes Hall, featuring Eberle wines. Gary Eberle grew up in Coraopolis and attended Penn State. He fell in love with Paso and the Central Coast. His interest in chemistry led him to applying that knowledge to winemaking. Among so many accolades, Gary is considered the “Pioneer of Central Coast wines”. At the Showcase event, guests will enjoy four wines selected by Gary and expertly paired by Bob Marivelli. The Showcase event will be exclusively Eberle wines, with a sommelier and food pairings in the ballroom and gardens of Holmes Hall.
Eberle, along with other Central Coast wineries, have been incredibly excited to be a part of the event. Tobin James and Still Waters are signed up to be a part of the event. We are still working on other wineries to join.
Your Help is Appreciated
With all of the excitement about the participation from the Central Coast, we still need of help locally. Volunteers are needed to help prepare the pairings (food for the tour), help the homeowners, and volunteer to support set up and tear down for the after party. John and Trish Burton have graciously volunteered their home to celebrate after the event. There are other areas you can help, just let me know what you’d like to do!

Planning has started for our summer fundraising event, A Tour and Tasting in the Homes and Gardens of Old Allegheny, which will be held on Friday, June 3 and Saturday, June 4 (5:00 – 9:00 pm both evenings).
It’s a home and garden tour. It’s a wine tasting. It’s an entire evening of great food and entertainment!
This year our tour will be highlighting California and featuring both red and white wines and hors d’oeuvres paired to complement those wines at seven homes and gardens in our neighborhood. As in years past, we are having all the tours gather together at the beginning of the tour at John DeSantis’ house. Tour goers will then visit six other beautiful and unique homes in our neighborhood.
Tickets cost $70 each and are now on sale on our website, or by calling 1-888-71-TICKETS, M-F, 9:00 am-9:00 pm. Get the word out to friends, relatives, and co-workers to purchase their tickets now. Why not get a group of friends together and enjoy a summer evening?
Thank you to the following homeowners whose homes and gardens are scheduled to be on tour:
- John DeSantis: Brighton Road
- Bob & Carole Malakoff: Brighton Road
- Mitchell Schwartz & Elaine Stone: 800 block West North Avenue
- Trish & John Burton: 900 block Beech Avenue
- Ross Catalano: 800 block Western Avenue
- Carol Gomrick & Brett Kempf: 900 block West North Avenue
…and one more special home to be named.
Our neighborhood cooks and bakers who have volunteered to make hors d’oeuvres to serve at one stop on the tour. If you can help them in their efforts in creating appetizers. You just need to follow their instruction—please let us know as soon as possible.
We need volunteers to help the homeowners with food prep, serving, pouring wine and clean up. Please let us know if we can count on you for one, two or all three tours. It’s a lot of fun to help with this event—and you’re invited to our volunteer party on Saturday (which will be held and Cathy and Gene’s home on Beech Avenue)!
So…please let us know how you can contribute by contacting Carrie Doyle at email@example.com or (412) 337-6020. Cheers!
Daffodils and tulips are up and the trees are blooming – Spring is finally here! As we see the signs of a new season in the neighborhood, it’s planning time for our Summer 2016 fundraiser, A Tour & Tasting in the Homes and Gardens of Old Allegheny. This year, the tours will take place on Friday evening, June 3rd, and Saturday evening, June 4th. It’s a house and garden tour, a wine tasting and a great evening of entertainment.
This year, our tour will be highlighting California, featuring both red and white wines, hors d’oeuvres and desserts paired to complement the wines in six homes and gardens in our neighborhood.
We need many volunteers to:
- Be tour guides
- Help homeowners (serve, pour, clean up)
- Help tour weekend
- Be on the committee (yes, wine will be tasted at each meeting!)
If you would like to help with this year’s tour, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or call Carrie Doyle at (412) 337-6020 or email: email@example.com. Our first meeting will be held on April 11th @ 7:30 pm at Carrie’s (950 Beech Ave, #1). Join the fun! Tickets can soon be purchased online.
We wanted to make sure folks who signed up for notifications had one last reminder to purchase tickets for the tour before the write-up about the tour runs in the Post-Gazette this weekend. There are only a few places left for Friday. Saturday afternoon has the most openings if you’re hoping to bring a larger group. There will be no tickets available at the door; advanced purchase required.
It’s a house and garden tour.
Guests will visit some of the most lavishly decorated homes and gardens in the Pittsburgh area. Learn about French architectural and literary influences in the neighborhood.
It’s a wine tasting – featuring wine from France.
Guests will sample a variety of regional reds and whites from France, one at each stop on the tour, and hors d’oeuvres to accompany them.
