Krapp’s Last Tape – Performed by Martin Giles
An aging man lives a lonely and shabby existence in a darkened room. At year’s end, he takes out a bottle of wine, a banana, and his tape recorder, and he listens to his own voice recount the glories and hopes of his youth. Krapp’s Last Tape is the most affectionate portrait of a character that Samuel Beckett has ever done. A tour-de-force of a one-man show.

An empty stage save for a lone woman’s lips. The voice of a generation of women that were unable to speak and now cannot stop. Alone in an empty world, this tortured soul recounts her life in one long uninterrupted monologue. Even if she can’t be heard, she will still speak.A Successful 2nd Annual Allegheny West Art Show

Our second annual neighborhood Art Show & Sale took place Friday June 24th and continued into Saturday June 25th, and it was a wonderful improvement on last year’s successful event! Allegheny West resident artist and show founder Dennis Bergevin, with support from numerous skilled neighbors, expanded the show this year to include artists and attendees from all across the Northside. The expansion was made logistically possible by the new location at 831 W North Avenue, generously offered for the show by Elaine Stone and Mitchell Schwartz, neighbors and owners of SMARTSolution Technologies. Their crew at SMARTSolution also helped ready the space for the event. Beyond being just bigger, the space, with its open layout, exposed brick walls and huge arching windows was the perfect venue for such a large and wide-ranging show of artwork.
Fifty artists submitted up to two pieces each for a show of close to 100 works of art. Thankfully we had wonderful neighbors like Shannon & Holly Pultz and Jonathan Steinhauser who were willing to lend their time and skills to expertly hang and light everything.
Other talented friends and neighbors generously contributed to the event’s success as well: Lili Troviato provided musical entertainment, Ritsu Shimizu created beautiful flower arrangements, Cheryl Towers painted signage (as well as helping out generally with the event) and Sara Beck Sweeney helped with marketing. Dennis donated one of his paintings to be raffled off to benefit the Humane Society and Hilary Mosser donated her time to sell the raffle tickets throughout Friday night’s event. Their efforts raised $350 for the cause.
An estimated 150 people attended the event, purchasing 20 works of art. AWCC provided not only their support, but also snacks, wine and other beverages, and paper products.
Thank you to all those mentioned in this article, as well as the friends and neighbors who brought food and drink to share. Thanks also to those numerous individuals who pitched in when they saw a need: Scott Mosser, Eleanor Coleman and last but certainly not least Dennis’ husband, Doug Schreck. Everyone’s collaboration and support made for a wonderful event! We are already looking forward to next year!
Congratulations Tom Barbush, Rib Cook-Off Champion!

The day was rainy, but the crowd still came out for Allegheny West’s 1st Annual BBQ Rib Cook-Off! After it was all said and done, not a single rib was left! The vote was close, but in the end, it was Tom Barbush that took home the trophy! Congratulations, Tom!
I’d like to thank all the contestants for making the event such a great success and making the judges deliberations so difficult! Next year, Tom will be heading up the panel of judges and passing the trophy on to our next winner. For all of you who considered entering, you now have almost 12 months to perfect YOUR entry!
Note: Some serving dishes and spoons were left behind. If you want to claim yours, please stop by the office during office hours (M/F 12:00 – 3:00 pm) to pick them up.

Open Streets Pittsburgh Coming to Allegheny West

What if you could close down a few city streets, and use it for a few hours of good, healthy, family fun?
Well, you’d have OpenStreetsPGH!
On Sunday, July 31st, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, OpenStreetsPGH is coming to the Northside and West End! Organized by Bike Pittsburgh and presented by Highmark Inc and the Colcom Foundation, OpenStreetsPGH is an event series that connects neighborhoods by creating temporarily car-free spaces where people can be active. Local businesses are encouraged to take over the sidewalks while everyone can freely enjoy the streets. And the idea is catching on in Pittsburgh: 20,000 people attended the May OpenStreetsPGH held on Butler St and Penn Ave and thousands more participated in June.
Get ready to experience familiar Northside streets as never before – free from car traffic. The third and final OpenStreetsPGH event of 2016 will allow everyone to join the fun and reclaim the streets as places to walk, bike, shop, skate and play. The three-mile route will span from Market Square in Downtown, across the Clemente Bridge, over to Western Ave, across the West End Bridge to Main Street in the West End. A car-free West End Bridge will provide an unbeatable view of Downtown Pittsburgh for people of all ages to enjoy. “We’re calling it our City of Bridges route,” remarked Bike Pittsburgh Executive Director Scott Bricker.
Three programming hubs along the route will offer 12 free, family-friendly fitness classes, including pilates from Physique Rx’d, basketball with the Pittsburgh Bullets, as well as classes such as yoga and Zumba, provided by the YMCA.

City of Asylum is proud to team up with the Jacob Burns Film Center to present the Silenced Film Series, weekly screenings of international films that have been banned or censored around the world.
Every Thursday this summer we are featuring a different film each week–from comedies to dramas, from classic films to new cinema–each with their own unique history of censorship.

TREE PITTSBURGH: Tree Tender Course
Join Tree Pittsburgh’s Tree Tending Army!
This is a 3 part evening series and participants must attend all 3 sessions for Tree Tender Certification.
This course covers urban forestry practices, tree biology and health, basic tree identification, proper pruning and maintenance, and instruction on how to lead your community in organizing tree plantings and tree care.
