Storytelling Fun for the Whole Family

Take your children on a storytelling trip around the world. Launching this new series is storyteller Kuniko Yamamoto. Kuniko Yamamoto combines charming Japanese folktales with traditional Japanese musical instruments, magical masks, origami and mime to create storytelling that will have audience spellbound in their seats. Using origami, music and audience participation, Kuniko provides a magical entry into Japanese culture. In her unique show “Origami Tales” mythological character masks & puppets, amazing flowers and a dragon (all made from origami) set the stage while Kuniko shares heartfelt stories from ancient Japan. Kuniko is an internationally renowned performer who has graced such venues as The Kennedy Center and Disney’s Epcot Center. Expect boundless imagination out of simple paper folding and uplifting world of storytelling. Be sure to RSVP to save a seat for you and your family members!

Guided by the science and wisdom of two saints, Driftless unearths the full cost of hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, and asks us to consider lives, relationships and heritage as we seek answers for the future of our world. Why must families choose between their health and a viable economic future?

Based on interviews with community members, Driftless brings an ongoing debate into the heart of our family kitchens.

Doors Open Pittsburgh Seeks Volunteers

Doors Open Pittsburgh

Doors Open Pittsburgh is a FREE, 2-day event that will provide “behind-the-scenes” access, or some unique experience, to a collection of iconic buildings in Downtown Pittsburgh.

Doors Open Pittsburgh takes place the weekend of October 1st-2nd, from 9:00 am-4:00 pm.

Open buildings will include private clubs, theaters, adaptive re-use, residential, heritage sites, government offices, hotels, sacred places, artists and office spaces.

No advance reservations are required and no tickets are required.

The open building will either provide a semi/fully guided tour or will allow for self-exploration.

Doors Open Pittsburgh is looking for 350 volunteers to help greet and guide guests. The deadline for applications is August 22nd.

Take a Bike Tour of GTECH’s Green Space Projects

GTECH Bike Tour

Two Wheels Lots of Green is a guided bike tour designed to connect people to GTECH’s vacant lot reclamation projects. This year we will be cruising through neighborhoods in South Pittsburgh’s Hilltop communities. GTECH has been working with residents and community groups in the Hilltop for the past two years to turn vacant lots into community assets, including gardens, parklets and playspaces.

Join us to view these unique green spaces and meet the community members who made them possible. Riders will be provided refreshments by local eateries throughout the ride to refuel during the tour. Here is a video of one of our first Two Wheels Lots of Green events. We are excited about how this event continues to grow and helps fuel GTECH’s mission!

City of Asylum is hosting three FREE films this week right here under our Alphabet City Tent.

On Monday we celebrate the community work of one of our own Lisa Freeman with a screening of the Manchester Growing Together, a documentary about her community farm. Thursday we are giving voice to the Silenced Film Battleship Potemkin. Friday, screen the international film Saving Face, as part of ReelQ Pittsburgh’s monthly LGBTQ film series.

Neighbor to Neighbor Grant

We’re Halfway There

There’s still time to lead a $1,000 Neighbor-to-Neighbor project.

We’ve set a goal to support 50 Neighbor-to-Neighbor projects this year and we’re just about halfway there. What will you do with your Neighbor-to-Neighbor grant?

Want to host a community clean up or neighborhood gathering? Have a big idea that you want to test out? Neighbor-to-Neighbor $1,000 grants support small projects on the Northside – and we’re accepting applications through August 5th.

Anyone that lives or works on the Northside is eligible to apply for a Neighbor-to-Neighbor Grant from The Sprout Fund and use $1,000 to make the Northside the place to live, work and learn.
