Planning Time for Our Summer Fundraiser – California Dreaming!
Planning has started for our summer fundraising event, A Tour and Tasting in the Homes and Gardens of Old Allegheny, which will be held on Friday, June 3 and Saturday, June 4 (5:00 – 9:00 pm both evenings).
It’s a home and garden tour. It’s a wine tasting. It’s an entire evening of great food and entertainment!
This year our tour will be highlighting California and featuring both red and white wines and hors d’oeuvres paired to complement those wines at seven homes and gardens in our neighborhood. As in years past, we are having all the tours gather together at the beginning of the tour at John DeSantis’ house. Tour goers will then visit six other beautiful and unique homes in our neighborhood.
Tickets cost $70 each and are now on sale on our website, or by calling 1-888-71-TICKETS, M-F, 9:00 am-9:00 pm. Get the word out to friends, relatives, and co-workers to purchase their tickets now. Why not get a group of friends together and enjoy a summer evening?
Thank you to the following homeowners whose homes and gardens are scheduled to be on tour:
- John DeSantis: Brighton Road
- Bob & Carole Malakoff: Brighton Road
- Mitchell Schwartz & Elaine Stone: 800 block West North Avenue
- Trish & John Burton: 900 block Beech Avenue
- Ross Catalano: 800 block Western Avenue
- Carol Gomrick & Brett Kempf: 900 block West North Avenue
…and one more special home to be named.
Volunteer Opportunities
Our neighborhood cooks and bakers who have volunteered to make hors d’oeuvres to serve at one stop on the tour. If you can help them in their efforts in creating appetizers. You just need to follow their instruction—please let us know as soon as possible.
We need volunteers to help the homeowners with food prep, serving, pouring wine and clean up. Please let us know if we can count on you for one, two or all three tours. It’s a lot of fun to help with this event—and you’re invited to our volunteer party on Saturday (which will be held and Cathy and Gene’s home on Beech Avenue)!
So…please let us know how you can contribute by contacting Carrie Doyle at cadpgh@gmail.com or (412) 337-6020. Cheers!
Northside Sandwich Sampler & Le Tour de Sandwich
Believe it or not this silly little Northside restaurant promotion is in its 5
This year the title is “Episode V: The Pastrami Strikes Back” and while you don’t have to dress like Luke Skywalker to attend, there is a sandwich called “Obi Wann a Hoagie”. The promotion now runs 11 days, May 19-29th, so you can get to as many of the participating shops as you can!
The Northside Sandwich Sampler is Pittsburgh-famous thanks to Rick Sebak. He’s produced two videos about the event and you can view them here:
The Sampler this year will be held Thursday, May 19th at The Grand Hall at The Priory. Sample a dozen competing sandwiches, listen to the music of Northside’s own Johnny Angel and his Jam Band, and vote for the Northside Sandwich King (or Queen!). Tickets are on sale now at http://sandwichweek.pittsburghnorthside.com and proceeds benefit ROX Performance Academy, an NSLC program providing free music lessons to Northside kids!
Le Tour de Sandwich is also back! This bike ride to participating restaurants will be Saturday, May 21st and tickets are also available now. Proceeds benefit the NSLC Bike/Ped Committee, advocating for bike and trail improvements on Northside.
So get your tickets soon! We expect another sold out Sandwich Sampler event and the bike tour tickets are limited. And plan to visit the participating businesses all week long to vote in-restaurant for your favorite sandwich joint.
Spread the word and see yinz on Northside!

One Northside Neighbor-to-Neighbor Grants are Back!
Neighbor-to-Neighbor $1,000 grants are back!

One Northside Initiative
The Northside is a community of unparalleled assets. 18 neighborhoods strong, the Northside is built on a history of hard work and a rich array of personal and shared experiences. Building on the Northside’s strengths, a large-scale effort has been launched to create a shared agenda for progress that spans all Northside communities, one that creates an improved quality of life for ALL Northside residents, and ensures the revitalization of the Northside as a preferred destination.
With a long-term commitment from the Buhl Foundation as the catalyst for this collaborative work, the One Northside initiative is actively building partnerships with existing resource providers and community organizations from within the Northside and around the region to match assets and services directly to community needs.

The first cleanup of the season! Come help your neighbors read up the area ahead of the Pittsburgh Marathon this Sunday.
Beyond just the usual tidying we are seeking gardeners to help clean up the parklet, that Mary Callison has done such a beautiful job overseeing, at Western and Brighton. And to continue to maintain this neighborhood gem as Mary feels the need to pass the torch.

* Not that detailed. It only lists Western Ave, but since the race goes up to Ridge along Brighton and then down Galveston to Western more than Western will be closed.
We’re trying to track down exactly where and when they’re going to block traffic, but for sure if you park on…
- the 800 block of N Lincoln, Western & Maolis (might be able to take Rope down to Beech to get out)
- Galveston between Ridge and at least Dounton
- Brighton between Ridge and Beech
- anywhere on Ridge
…you’ll be completely locked in by the race. If you plan to go anywhere before 10:00 am the day of the marathon you’re going to need to move your car to another location the night before. They absolutely will not let you drive through the racers so please plan accordingly.
I will do my best to confirm exactly where they’re closing the roads, but I would suggest moving your cars to Beech or North at the very least. You only need to move your cars if you’re planning to go anywhere that morning.
They will actually tow cars (I think) along the race routes:
- Brighton from Western to Ridge
- Ridge from Brighton to Galveston
- Galveston from Ridge to Western
- Western from Galveston to Allegheny (and beyond)
In the past we’ve been able to arrange some temporary parking for people landlocked by the race but unfortunately the lots we’ve used in the past (i.e. Babe, etc) are blocked by the race this time around so folks will need to do their best to make alternate arrangements themselves. Again you only have to move your car if you park along the race route or if need to leave the neighborhood before 10:00 am the day of the marathon.
As soon as I get confirmation from the City, I’ll share with the neighborhood but please start thinking about any travel plans you have for Sunday morning.
See you at the Cheer-a-thon at Tim’s!
Thanks,
Cathy
