Jazz Pianist Cat Toren Returns!

City of Asylum (2018)

TMT Trio

Thursday, January 18th 8:00 pm

JUNO award-winning pianist Cat Toren‘s concert at Alphabet City last May was a sell-out and a big hit with the audience. She returns to Pittsburgh and Alphabet City – but with a different group – for another evening of cutting-edge, full-hearted jazz. TMT Trio The New York-based TMT Trio — a collaboration of Cat Toren (piano), Angela Morris (saxophone) and Anthony Taddeo (drums) — will play both original compositions and collaborative improvisations. TMT’s bass-free instrumentation showcases the multifaceted chamber music character of the piano and explores the extension of the roles of all three instruments.

Letter from the President – December 2017

So what are you doing on Tuesday evening?

Each month this is where we make decisions about our neighborhood—decisions that in ways both small and large will affect you. And we always have a good time socializing and enjoying refreshments — especially at our last meeting before the holidays!

Everyone is welcome – second Tuesday of each month, 7:30 pm, in the Calvary Church social hall, corner of Beech and Allegheny Avenues (use the Beech Avenue entrance). The meeting is usually over by 9:00 pm. It’s also a great way for newer folks to meet your neighbors and get involved!

We hope to see you on Tuesday evening!

The Pittsburgh Symphony Presents a Concert About the Nature of Creation

City of Asylum (2017)

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Presents

Reimagining Creation

Monday, November 27th
8:00 pm

Acclaimed opera and theater director Sam Helfrich joins PSO music director Manfred Honeck and a trio of classical vocalists – Rachele Gilmore (soprano), Werner Güra (tenor), and Alexander Elliott (bass) – with a piano accompaniment.

Clarion String Quartet

Following his widely successful staged interpretations of Handel’s Messiah and Bach’s St. John Passion, Helfrich will illuminate the six most famous days in all of Judeo-Christian history with a theatrical presentation of Haydn’s beloved Creation.

The music will be counterpointed by readings from City of Asylum writer-in-exile Tuhin Das (Bangladesh), ICORN poet Esterine Kire (Norway/India) … and other special guest authors! Each writer will present work approaching the topic of creation from secular points of view.

Old Allegheny Victorian Christmas House Tour

The Tour is shaping up for December 8th and 9th. Here are the updates:

  1. Flyers are going into the mail. A big thanks to Trish Burton for coordinating the effort…once again, it went off like clockwork. Thanks also to Greg Coll for designing and managing the printing. The flyers are lovely.

A big thank you from Carol and Trish to all who helped put address labels on the 8008 (!) postcards that we’ll be sending to advertise the tour. A special thanks to Quentin Lane and Charlie and Eli Sweeney for giving up homework time to help us set a new record! We have extra postcards available should anyone want to distribute to coworkers and friends, or to post on community bulletin boards.
  2. Next up, putting the swags together. We’ll be meeting at Cathy and Gene’s house on December 2nd at 9:00 am Please come and help. The swags help make the entire neighborhood look so special for the tour guests. In addition to putting them together, we’ll be looking for volunteers to help hang the swags.
  3. We’re still on the hunt for the final house. Please consider joining the tour this year. Contact Carol ASAP at carolgomrick@gmail.com.
  4. If you haven’t signed up to volunteer yet, please reach out to Doug Sprague at doug.osrg@gmail.com
  5. There are so many people who continue to help behind the scenes to make the tour successful every year. Thank you for your efforts and support!
