The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Comes to Alphabet City
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Presents

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s popular chamber music series, Play N’at, comes to Alphabet City!
Comprised of chamber groups formed by musicians of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, this series showcases these ensembles in alternative venues around Pittsburgh. The Play N’at series provides opportunities for audiences to enjoy music selected by the musicians themselves in more intimate environments around the ‘Burgh.
City of Asylum @ Alphabet City’s concert will feature the Pittsburgh Cello Quartet and the Trapeze Ensemble, a wind and strings quintet. The repertoire is eclectic, featuring selections ranging from the Baroque to the Beatles. Come meet and mingle with musicians in a casual atmosphere.

Sembène – The Film & Art Festival Presents

Moolaadé – the final film of Ousmane Sembène, after whom this film festival is named – is at once a passionately critical look at an African practice of female genital mutilation (practiced in more than 38 countries) and a tribute to everyday heroism of African women and men against the tremendous internal problems facing modern day, post-colonial Africa.
In a small village, four young girls facing ritual ‘purification’ flee to the household of Collé Ardo Gallo Sy, a strong-willed woman who has managed to shield her own teenage daughter from mutilation by invoking the time-honored custom of moolaadé (sanctuary). Though the subject matter may seem weighty, the film maintains a buoyant hopefulness through its depiction of vibrant village life laden with mythic overtones and spirited song.

Kalopsia (kal-op-see-uh) is the delusion of things being more beautiful than what they are. Both courageous and comic, this daring new musical takes a look inside mental illness in the black community. Kalopsia is a no-holds-barred journey into a surreal world of music, glam, faith and healing.

This presentation will provide a general overview of the history, design, construction and use of fireplaces, fire pits, ovens, and other traditional means for cooking and warming ourselves. We will discuss the various types of construction and materials typically used in heating sources; the science, engineering, and dimensions used in oven building; and different aspects of design to consider when building a fireplace, oven, or outdoor fire pit.
About the Presenter
Ian Miller has been a general contractor since 2003 with projects ranging from changing a doorknob to building a $1.5 million house for fifteen retired nuns. He is the owner of Zambano & Sons, a residential remodeling company, as well as partner in the HL2M Group, a design/build firm focused primarily on modular and shipping container construction. Ian and his family live in a 100-year old house in Friendship.

About the Presenter
Martha Swiss is a garden writer, designer, and speaker. She is a regular contributor to Pennsylvania Gardener magazine and the publications editor for the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden. Her articles have also appeared in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Fine Gardening. She is a graduate of Chatham University’s landscape design program and a Penn State master gardener.

Set in 1964 in the Deep South during the early days of the Civil Rights Movement, Violet is a beautiful musical that follows the growth and enlightenment of a bitter young woman who embarks on a journey from North Carolina to Tulsa, Oklahoma in the hopes that a TV evangelist can cure her. On her journey of self-discovery, she meets a young black soldier who teaches her about true beauty, love, courage and what it means to be an outsider.

Award-winning writer and LGBT activist Unoma Azuah (Nigeria) will be reading from her collection Blessed Body: Secret lives of LGBT Nigerians.
Forced to live invisible lives because of Nigerian’s harsh anti-LGBT laws, the courageous narrators in Unoma’s collection give voice to those Nigerians faced with the challenge of discovering and exploring their sexuality in the midst of hate and imprisonment. In spite of the political and social persecution they encounter and haunted by the specter of AIDS, they continue to endure, love and thrive.

One Northside Neighbor-to-Neighbor Grants Return
Neighbor-to-Neighbor $1,000 grants are Back!
How will you use $1,000 to benefit your Northside neighborhood?
For the third year in a row, The Sprout Fund is partnering with the Buhl Foundation to provide microgrants to support small-scale neighborhood-level projects through Neighbor-to-Neighbor Grants of up to $1,000.
Applicants must live or work on the Northside and funded project activities must take place in one of the 18 neighborhoods of the Northside.
Applications will be accepted on June 9th, July 7th, and August 4th.
