Free Tickets for Northsiders: Six A Breast

CORNINGWORKS September 6th, 7th and 9th
An evening of sharp irony and salient farce, a cascade of vaudevillian scenes. Performed by 3 women, Six A Breast encapsulates the lunacy of all our lives, no matter the gender, but women . . . they got the “mother lode” backwards and in heels. Starring Beth Corning, Sally Rousse and Laurie Van Wieren with choreography by Beth Corning. You’re Invited

International Jazz Poetry Month Kick-off
Tom Rainey Trio
Thursday, September 7th
7:00 pm
The Tom Rainey Trio will be performing in Philadelphia on September 16th, but you can catch them a week earlier (and for FREE) right here in Pittsburgh as the opening program of Jazz Poetry Month!
This is a concert no jazz lover should miss — three world-class musicians at the top of their game. We could not think of a better way to open our month-long jazz celebration.
Drummer and bandleader Tom Rainey has long been one of the most in-demand and influential drummers on the avant-garde scene. Known for his “off kilter” style, this trio is the perfect embodiment of his music. It hovers so tightly between composition and free improvisation that it gives the illusion of being completely arranged and intensely practiced.
Ingrid Laubrock (saxophone) and Mary Halvorson (guitar) are also powerhouses. Ingrid is known for her textural nuance, an intellectual player who also can let go with abandon. And many of us know Mary from several appearances at City of Asylum– with Thumbscrew, Stephan Crump, and as a soloist.
These three musicians have been described as “sonic adventurers significantly extending the lexicons of their instruments.” Translate this as: Together, they play a seamless improvised jazz that sounds like nothing else.

PWSA Issues Flush & Boil Advisory for Northside
The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority (PWSA) has issued a precautionary flush and boil water advisory today for customers in the northern neighborhoods of the City as well as the Borough of Millvale and Reserve Township. The purpose of the advisory is to ensure that all drinking water meets regulatory standards. The health and safety of our drinking water is PWSA’s number one priority.
The temporary advisory is due to deficiencies in the cover of the Lanpher reservoir that could compromise water quality. PWSA has isolated the reservoir from the water distribution system until repairs can be completed. The Authority is coordinating with the Pennsylvania Department of Environment (DEP) to ensure that all regulatory requirements for disinfection continue to be met. PWSA will also conduct flushing throughout the impacted area to eliminate potentially compromised water.
The impacted areas are shown on the attached map (also available here: PWSA Boil Water Area). PWSA estimates the precautionary flush and boil water advisory affects approximately 18,000 homes in the PWSA service area. Impacted areas include Allegheny West.
Customers within the impacted area should do the following before using water for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth, and food preparation until further notice:
- Boil tap water vigorously for at least one minute prior to using it for drinking or cooking (the minute starts when the water begins to bubble). This includes water used for brushing teeth, making ice, washing raw foods, preparation of drinks and water for pets.
- Wait for the water to cool before using it, or store it in the refrigerator in a clean container.
Residents who do not know if their property has lead water pipes or solder, it is recommended to first flush your lines by running water from your tap for at least one minute before boiling.
Flushing water brings in fresh water from the main and boiling fresh water kills any bacteria and other organisms that can enter the water. You can also use bottled water. A frequently asked questions document for boiling water can be found on the www.pgh2o.com homepage.

Share Your Views for Allegheny Commons Park
The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy is looking for users of Allegheny Commons Park to provide input and perspective on the park and its current uses as well as how the park can be better programmed and utilized. With the guidance of the Northside Leadership Conference and the Allegheny Commons Initiative, the 2002 Master Plan for Allegheny Commons set forth a vision for restoring and increasing the value of Allegheny Commons. While significant progress has been made, fulfilling that vision requires an Action Plan for implementing the 2002 Master Plan, including appropriate updates and strategic bundling of projects into campaign projects.

At a time when few architectural firms would hire women, Frank Lloyd Wright unhesitatingly employed women, giving them both training and the opportunity to practice. Ultimately, over 100 women architects and designers worked with Wright, many of them going on to remarkable careers of their own. In his studio in Oak Park and at both Taliesin Fellowships, Wright trained and practiced with women as draftsmen, designers, and fellow visionaries. “A Girl Is A Fellow Here”: Women Architects in the Studio of Frank Lloyd Wright focuses on six of those women – Marion Mahony, Isabel Roberts, Lois Gottlieb, Jane Duncombe, Eleanore Pettersen and Read Weber.
About the Film
This documentary is a production of the Beverly Willis Architectural Foundation (BWAF). Founded in 2002, BWAF, is charged with advancing the knowledge and recognition of women’s contributions to architecture. It embraces issues specific to women currently working within the building industry. To this end, BWAF both commissions and curates research that pertains to women working at all levels within all fields of practice — including architecture, engineering, construction, design, landscape, preservation and planning.
All lectures are free to PHLF members. Non-members: $10
