4th Annual Allegheny West Art Show
The 4th Annual Allegheny West Art Show is back! Showcasing work by artists living and/or working across the Northside, and their fellow artists. The opening will be Friday night, May 11th, starting at 6:30. Enjoy food and beverage courtesy of AWCC while browsing a great and diverse collection of art on display, at HIP’s wonderful space! (HIP at the Flashlight Factory, 831 W North Avenue) The show continues on Saturday, May 12th from noon to 5:00 pm.
Help Wanted: Gazette Delivery
The Allegheny West Gazette is in need of a new delivery person to take the 900 block of West North Avenue and all of Galveston Avenue. This is approximately 50 homes, and takes 15-20 minutes monthly. It’s a great way for neighbors – young or old – to volunteer. Please contact Karen at gazette@alleghenywest.org if you are able to help out!
Consider Donating Blood
It’s always a good season to donate blood, but summer is especially important due to regular donors often being on vacation. If you’re able, consider a donation at a convenient blood drive. One of our Allegheny West neighbors has needed fourteen units of blood and six of platelets over the past 6–8 weeks. Accident victims, surgery candidates and blood cancer patients will be very grateful for your generous donation.
Remember: Street Sweeping
It’s street sweeping season again. Remember to check signs and move your car. The street sweeper will come on Tuesday, May 8th and Monday, May 14th.

Abandoned America: An Autopsy of the American Dream
Join author and photographer Matthew Christopher, creator of the Abandoned America website and book series, on a journey through some of the country’s most fascinating and hauntingly beautiful ruins. Matthew will relate his inspirations and how he came to explore such unusual spots, and share some of his favorites from across the state, focusing on the Pittsburgh region. A fascinating tour of forgotten schools, churches, prisons, factories, and homes that have not been included in his previous presentations, his work is at once a cry for the preservation of our vanishing architectural heritage and a eulogy for the ruins in our midst.
About the Presenter: Matthew Christopher has had an interest in abandoned sites since he was a child, but started documenting them a decade ago while researching the decline of the state hospital system. His work is featured in various publications and media outlets including the LA Times, ABC and NBC News, PDN, The Atlantic, Photographer’s Forum, Buzzfeed and others. You can follow his work through his web site, Abandoned America, which is considered one of the leading collections of images of abandoned spaces on the Internet.
All events are free to PHLF members. Non-members: $10 RSVPs are appreciated: marylu@phlf.org or (412) 471-5808 ext. 527
