PHLF: The Art of Artwork Restoration

This presentation covers the basic aspects of artwork restoration including oil paintings, murals icons, art on paper (posters, lithographs, and prints), sculptural pieces, and other works of art. Specific attention will be given to the difference between artwork restoration and repair and the proper ways to keep, exhibit, insure, and monitor art collections. Presented by Boris Brindar.

PHLF: Film Screening – A Girl is a Fellow Here

At a time when few architectural firms would hire women, Frank Lloyd Wright unhesitatingly employed women, giving them both training and the opportunity to practice. Ultimately, over 100 women architects and designers worked with Wright, many of them going on to remarkable careers of their own. In his studio in Oak Park and at both Taliesin Fellowships, Wright trained and practiced with women as draftsmen, designers, and fellow visionaries. “A Girl Is A Fellow Here”: Women Architects in the Studio of Frank Lloyd Wright focuses on six of those women – Marion Mahony, Isabel Roberts, Lois Gottlieb, Jane Duncombe, Eleanore Pettersen and Read Weber.
About the Film
This documentary is a production of the Beverly Willis Architectural Foundation (BWAF). Founded in 2002, BWAF, is charged with advancing the knowledge and recognition of women’s contributions to architecture. It embraces issues specific to women currently working within the building industry. To this end, BWAF both commissions and curates research that pertains to women working at all levels within all fields of practice — including architecture, engineering, construction, design, landscape, preservation and planning.

This presentation will provide a general overview of the history, design, construction and use of fireplaces, fire pits, ovens, and other traditional means for cooking and warming ourselves. We will discuss the various types of construction and materials typically used in heating sources; the science, engineering, and dimensions used in oven building; and different aspects of design to consider when building a fireplace, oven, or outdoor fire pit.
About the Presenter
Ian Miller has been a general contractor since 2003 with projects ranging from changing a doorknob to building a $1.5 million house for fifteen retired nuns. He is the owner of Zambano & Sons, a residential remodeling company, as well as partner in the HL2M Group, a design/build firm focused primarily on modular and shipping container construction. Ian and his family live in a 100-year old house in Friendship.

This class profiles beautiful perennials, annuals, shrubs, and trees they especially adore and will help you learn which are best suited to your garden’s growing conditions. We’ll also discuss ways you can make your garden more enticing to pollinators and birds, and how to have your property certified as a wildlife habitat.
About the Presenter
Martha Swiss is a garden writer, designer, and speaker. She is a regular contributor to Pennsylvania Gardener magazine and the publications editor for the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden. Her articles have also appeared in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Fine Gardening. She is a graduate of Chatham University’s landscape design program and a Penn State master gardener.

At the dawn of the jet age, Eero Saarinen was called upon for two very important airport projects that helped to shape the way air transport would be accomplished in the United States. With the TWA Terminal at Idlewild Airport in New York (now JFK), Saarinen provided an important gateway and backdrop to the rapidly growing commercial aviation business in America. He and his team started from scratch, and worked to understand every functional aspect of airline operations. They optimized processes, and provided a template for other airports to follow.
About the Presenter
David Brashear, a PHLF Trustee and founder of the Landmarks Scholarship Program, has studied architectural history at Columbia University since 2009. He founded the Architectural Lecture Series at the Muscarelle Museum at the College of William and Mary in 2011. Mr. Brashear has lectured on a variety of architectural topics, and is currently working on a book highlighting key work sequences of five American architects of the 20th century. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the Harvard Business School.

2017 Allegheny West Preservation Awards

The Allegheny West Local Review Committee, along with The Allegheny West Civic Council, announce the 9th Annual Allegheny West Preservation Award. This award is presented to property owners in the Allegheny West Historic District who have completed projects over the past year which retain and restore appropriate elements of historic character and adhere to the neighborhood HRC Guidelines. Success was achieved by doing research, creating well thought-out plans, following neighborhood guidelines, and working with the neighborhood LRC and City HRC to seek advice.
The 2017 Awards Recipients
909 Western Avenue
Owner: Sally Graubarth
This was an extensive restoration of both the interior and exterior, as well as the carriage house. Sally and her architect, John Francona, worked with the LRC and the HRC to make this project an example of the highest quality of historic restoration.
The exterior work included: a new storefront and door consistent with that of the original; new entrance doors to 2nd floor living space with transom and trim; new front wood, double-hung windows including circle-top windows on the 3rd floor; new stable style carriage house doors; restoration of the carriage house dormers; cleaning and painting the brick and stone on the façade.
This project is a great addition to the Western Avenue streetface. It adds to the historic ambience of the street, contributes to the economic development of our neighborhood, and serves as an example of how restoration should be done.
To celebrate Preservation Month, the award will be presented at the May Civic Council Meeting on Tuesday, May 9th at Calvary Church, corner Beech and Allegheny Avenues. Everyone is invited to come and meet Sally.

In this workshop, learn the parts, terminology, and disassembly methods for wooden double hung windows. Stabilizing and repairing failing sash and frame components will also be covered. Interested participants that missed the exterior woodwork presentation in February may wish to attend this workshop because many of the same wood repair techniques will be revisited in the context of window repair.
