The Netflix film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, based on a play by August Wilson and starring Viola Davis, is set to be filmed in Allegheny West. The film, which takes place in 1920s Chicago, will include exterior scenes of buildings in the neighborhood.
- The filming is expected to occur between July 8th and 12th during daylight hours. The 800 block of W North Avenue is anticipated to be closed to traffic for approximately two days so that exterior scenes of the street and buildings can be filmed.
- A set depicting Chicago in 1927 is to be constructed in the lot between the Stables Building and Q Development in the 800 block of W North Avenue. Construction of this set will begin around June 20th but should not affect traffic on W North Avenue.
- Exterior filming in the 700 block of Brighton Road is expected to last approximately 2 hours.
- Interior filming of a home in the 900 block of North Lincoln Avenue is expected to last approximately 6 hours.
