Allegheny West Summer Fundraising Events 2020

Submitted by Carol Gomrick

Happy Spring! OK, not really spring yet, but the weather is breaking and the sun is peeking through the clouds, which starts getting folks out of the winter cocoon and outside. This raises the excitement for the summer tours. I’m really happy to share some updates below:

Tour & Tasting in Old Allegheny

Friday June 19th and Saturday June 20th

The Valentine’s Day promotion paid off. We already have 88 tickets sold and it’s only March. This is a great indicator that this tour is an event that folks get excited about and want on their calendar. We will be doing additional marketing but can always use your help in spreading the word and awareness of the event.

Pour & Plates – A Wine Showcase Event

Saturday September 12th

Deb Mortillaro of Dreadnought Wines will host an intimate evening in the beautiful gardens of Holmes Hall, discussing personally selected wines she’s pairing for each of the five courses. All in Good Taste Productions, the premier caterer in Pittsburgh, is currently working on a menu to bring guests classic dishes from the great wine regions of the world. No doubt this will be a spectacular culinary and wine experience. This event sold out in 2018 and I’m thrilled to offer this unique experience again. The menu has already been selected and will be posted on line shortly. Deb has started to select the proper wines. I’m sure it will be a tremendous experience for all.

Note: New this year the event is offering a full vegetarian option for guests. Guests will enjoy a full pour to pair with their menu selection, but also enjoy a small taste of the alternate wine pairings.

Some additional news about this event: The caterer provides staff for the food prep and coordination. This is a low-impact event from a volunteer perspective. The last time this event was held, there were 4 volunteers in addition to the caterer. Two of those volunteers were from the neighborhood. I am always grateful for the volunteer support from the neighborhood. If you have any questions concerning this event, or have any interest in volunteering please contact me.

Your feedback is needed! Tuesday March 24th 7:00 pm, AWCC Office: I will be holding a meeting to kick off discussions on volunteer opportunities, to identify tasks for the Wine Tour and to answer any questions the neighborhood may have. Please mark your calendars and come on over to discuss. These tours cannot be successful without your help and I greatly appreciate all that the neighborhood does to make them successful.

Thank you for your help in 2019 and I’m looking forward to a successful 2020. CHEERS!

I’m thrilled to share that all of the homes are secured for the 2019 Wine Tour. Thank you to the following homeowners for opening up your homes.

2019 Homes

Holmes Hall (719 Brighton Road)
Scott Keeney (905 Beech Avenue)
Carol & Brett (940 W North Avenue)
CCAC West Hall (Ridge Avenue)
Emmanuel Church (957 W North Avenue)
Dennis & Doug (808 Galveston Avenue)

PLEASE NOTE! We are very excited that we are looking to have on the tour West Hall part of CCAC. This stop is added so guests will be able to view the incredible exhibit sharing a 50-year history retrospective of Allegheny West. An incredible story, beautifully woven together by Doris Short and Greg Coll. Doris and Greg will be on hand to walk guest through the exhibit. We would be remiss if we did not thank CCAC for generously opening the hall for the tour and allowing the exhibit to be extended for the guests.

I would be remiss if I didn’t thank Dr Quintin Bullock, CCAC President, Dr Evon W. Walters, Campus President and Mary Henderson with Facilities who all have supported the efforts to open these historic buildings for our tours. Please look in the near future on the Allegheny West website and in the program for upcoming wine tasting classes being offered at the CCAC Allegheny Campus.

2019 Tour and Tasting

Submitted by Annette Trunzo, Ways and Means Chair

The 2019 Tour and Tasting will be held on Friday June 21st and Saturday June 22nd. The Committee is excited to share that we have several houses, but we still need a few more. If you are interested in putting your home and garden on tour, please contact Carol Gomrick: carolgomrick@gmail.com.

The theme of the tour will be a vastly different from previous tours. To highlight the incredible restaurant scene in Pittsburgh, the committee is reaching out to local restaurants to provide the food “tastings” and appropriate wine pairings. Guests will not only have the opportunity to try a variety of wines, but also learn more about what is making Pittsburgh such a foodie destination! Starting in April, the committee will be asking for help to promote the tour through social media and will share available volunteer opportunities. Please continue to check the Gazette and weekly email blast for updates and information.

It’s time to start planning for the 2019 Tour & Tasting Event!

Yay – the Polar Vortex is over and Punxsutawney Phil says spring is right around the corner, so it must be time to start planning for the 2019 Allegheny West Wine Tour! The dates are set, Friday June 21st and Saturday June 22nd. The approach is going to be a little bit different this year. Pittsburgh has been recognized nationally and internationally as a destination for foodies. To capitalize on that and draw more awareness to the tour and Allegheny West, the tour committee is going to solicit restaurants to participate and present their food and suggested wine pairing at the homes. I’m excited to share that we’ve already been successful in raising strong interest from several restaurants.

In the short term what is needed are homes! If you are interested in having your house on the wine tour this year, have any questions, or want to know how you can help please contact me Annette Trunzo at
act1@pitt.edu. I’m really excited about the tour this year and to network with restaurants about the event. Please check the Gazette and weekly e-newsletter for updates about the tour and tour meetings. Cheers!

Wine Tour Clean Up Reminder

Tour-goers will be walking through our neighborhood the weekend of June 22nd – 23rd, traveling along Brighton Road, N Lincoln Avenue, Galveston Avenue, North Avenue, Beech and Allegheny Avenues, as well as Rope Way.

Please begin now to pull weeds in front of your property and to fill a bag or two with trash, old leaves and other “street” debris along the tour route so that we can put our best face forward. Should you need trash bags or gloves, please contact Trish Burton, (412) 523-9402 or tdburton3@gmail.com.

Also, if you intend to plant flower boxes or urns in front of your property, please consider doing so before the tour so that our guests have a lovely walk between host houses. Thanks in advance for helping to beautify Allegheny West!

New this year is a Showcase event at Holmes Hall, featuring Eberle wines. Gary Eberle grew up in Coraopolis and attended Penn State. He fell in love with Paso and the Central Coast. His interest in chemistry led him to applying that knowledge to winemaking. Among so many accolades, Gary is considered the “Pioneer of Central Coast wines”. At the Showcase event, guests will enjoy four wines selected by Gary and expertly paired by Bob Marivelli. The Showcase event will be exclusively Eberle wines, with a sommelier and food pairings in the ballroom and gardens of Holmes Hall.

Eberle, along with other Central Coast wineries, have been incredibly excited to be a part of the event. Tobin James and Still Waters are signed up to be a part of the event. We are still working on other wineries to join.

Your Help is Appreciated

With all of the excitement about the participation from the Central Coast, we still need of help locally. Volunteers are needed to help prepare the pairings (food for the tour), help the homeowners, and volunteer to support set up and tear down for the after party. John and Trish Burton have graciously volunteered their home to celebrate after the event. There are other areas you can help, just let me know what you’d like to do!
