Free Opening Reception for New Installations: 40th Year
Diana Nelson Jones @ City Books
You are invited to join us on Saturday night (September 23rd) when City Books holds the local launch of The Love of Baseball, a new collection of essays edited by Post-Gazette writer (and Northsider!) Diana Nelson Jones. Written by and for baseball fans (or those trying to live with one), this collection of essays joins a perennial conversation all fans have— “Why do we love baseball?” Thirty contributors share personal narratives of how they found an abiding passion for the sport and how their relationship to it changed over the years. Tracing the thematic arc of a typical season, the essays begin with stories of spring training optimism, followed by the guts and grind of the regular season, and ending with the glory (or heartbreak) of the playoffs. Discussion and book signing to follow.

What happens when we look in a mirror? Do we witness a reflection of our true selves or the sum of the ghosts that travel with us? Utilizing a range of disciplines to conjure their personal ghosts, veteran artists Frank Ferraro and Adrienne Wehr take us on a fearless journey of life on life’s terms.
This world premiere is the result of a two-year collaboration between Wehr and Ferraro. In sharing their own stories with each other, they recognized universal themes common to us all, inspiring them to bring these stories to life through spoken word, video, original music, installation art, soundscapes and more.

Coming to Pittsburgh direct from Poland, the musicians of LAM will perform two nights of solos and one as an ensemble.
Friday, September 22nd: Wacław Zimpel has been praised by the The New York Times as a “musical chameleon” and by All About Jazz as “one of the most promising musicians on the European continent.” He will play a solo concert, improvising to a pre-recorded track. And he will collaborate with COA exiled writer-in-residence Osama Alomar (Syria), Maung Day (Myanmar) and Cave Canem co-founder Toi Derricotte.
Saturday, September 23rd: All 3 musicians play together as a trio. This is inspired music, trancelike in a minimalist mode – dizzyingly polyrythmic and lyrical. We don’t use the word “awesome” often, but this concert is one you shouldn’t miss. In addition to their concert sets, LAM will collaborate with poets Kinga Tóth (Hungary), Maung Day (Myanmar) and Matjaž Pikalo (Slovenia).
Sunday, September 24th: LAM members Hubert Zemler (drums) and Krzysztof Dys (keys) will play extended solos, then collaborate with National Medal of the Arts winner Sandra Cisneros, Matjaž Pikalo (Slovenia), and Pittsburgh writer/activist Leon Ford.

Novelist, short story writer, journalist and Otra Orilla Literary Prize winner Santiago Gamboa (Colombia) will be debuting his newly published novel Return to the Dark Valley here at Alphabet City.
In a narrative that moves across continents, from Spain to Ethiopia and Latin America, Return to the Dark Valley examines the life of Manuela Beltrán — a poet haunted by a troubled childhood. Her vendetta takes her around the world and puts her in the company of a vibrant cast of characters each wrestling with their own demons. These characters animate Gamboa’s richly imagined portrait of a hostile, turbulent world where liberation is found in perpetual movement and determined exploration.

Help Develop The Allegheny Commons Master Plan
The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy is excited to work alongside our partners at the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny Commons Initiative, Northside Leadership Conference and the greater community to renew Allegheny Commons Park.
Please join your fellow park users at a series of community workshops to develop the action plan we need for implementing the master plan.
This effort will be completed by the end of 2017, and will produce strategies and cost estimates for implementing the 2002 Master Plan.

Guided and tempered by powerful life lessons and rooted in jazz traditions laid down by Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington and other leading ladies of past generations, she borrows various elements of folk, R&B and even classical and country to create a captivating hybrid style. Her body of work is musical, but it’s more than just music.
It’s an exploration of the bright and dark corners of the human experience, and an affirmation of the power of the human spirit.

Letter from the President – September 2017
So what are you doing on Tuesday evening?
Following our two month Summer break without General Membership meetings, you should be well rested and ready to join your neighbors as we direct Allegheny West along the exciting course that we have now sailed together for more than 55 years.
A big THANK YOU to the many AW folks (you know who you are!) who continued to attend all of those OTHER meetings all Summer: Executive, Housing & Planning, Ways & Means and Membership Committees — and meetings for the Northside Leadership Conference, Allegheny Commons Initiative and others—as well as those who volunteered for clean-ups and for our Allegheny West Summer community picnics on Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day.
We will all be getting together again on Tuesday, September 12 at 7:30 pm at Calvary Church to find out what’s going on. This is where you get the straight story and ask questions, where you can bring your local issues or problems and, most importantly, where you and your neighbors decide what we’re going to do about them.
This monthly meeting is where and when we make decisions about our neighborhood—decisions that in ways both small and large will affect you. And we always have a good time socializing and enjoying refreshments while we’re at it!
Everyone is welcome—second Tuesday of each month, 7:30 pm, in the Calvary Church social hall, on the corner of Beech and Allegheny Avenues (use the Beech Avenue entrance). The meeting’s usually over by 9:00. It’s also a great way for newer folks to meet your neighbors and get involved! We hope to see you on Tuesday evening!
